Resolution No. 1869 RESOLUTION NO. 1869
A RESOLUTION COMMENDING EMPLOYEES
OF THE SOUTH TAHOE PUBLIC UTILITY DISTRICT
FOR THEIR EXCELLENT WORK DURING RECENT
EMERGENCY CONDITIONS
WHEREAS, the General Manager has reported to the Board as follows:
"On Saturday and Sunday, December 1 and 2, the District experienced the
longest electrical power outage in many years. Due to power lines downed by
heavy snows, there was no power at the treatment plant or at any of the 17 raw
sewage pumping stations for about 45 hours. Telephone service was interrupted
for an even longer period. Despite these handicaps, there was no interruption of
sewer service and only one minor sewer backup affecting one residence. This was
made possible by the timely and effective efforts of District personnel. The pump
station crew worked through the entire period without relief and with little or no
rest. Plant operators and maintenance crews also worked long hours under difficult
circumstances. All employees certainly are to be commended not only for their
efforts but also for the maintenance of service to the citizenry and the prevention
of a major catastrophe. The District is also grateful to Par Gas for supplying the
propane required to keep emergency generators operating at pump stations.
Deliveries were made at the height of the snowstorm and late at night during the
weekend. The early restoration of power by Sierra Pacific Power Company was also
greatly appreciated.
Power was lost at the plant about 5 :00 AM Saturday and was restored at
about 2 :00 AM Monday.
The natural gas driven emergency generator at the plant provided sufficient
power to provide secondary treatment to all wastewater (about 4mg) and to pump it
to the emergency storage pond. These waters will now be further processed and
exported. The emergency generator operated continuously without failure.
The large raw sewage pump stations are equipped with stationary natural
gas or propane driven auxiliary power. This emergency equipment also performed
well. Some of the smaller pump stations are serviced by a trailer mounted generator
which was moved from one station to another to pump out the wet well storage tanks
as required. This generator burned out on Sunday. Arrangements were made with
Roto- Rooter to pump out these stations which previously had been serviced by the
portable generator. Again, we are grateful for their help.
There were extra costs to the District because of the emergency conditions,
but major damages and costs from system failures were avoided."
,
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the Board of Directors of the SOUTH
TAHOE PUBLIC UTILITY DISTRICT formally commends it's employees in recognition
of a job well done and extends its appreciation for the excellent service rendered
to the patrons of our District.
