Talking Points with LRWQCB 8.29.18South Lake Tahoe PCE Groundwater Contamination Lahontan Regional Water Quality Control Board Talking Points September 29, 2018 During the meeting with Lahontan Regional Water Quality Control Board, the Water Suppliers (South Tahoe Public Utility District, Lukins Brothers Water Company, Tahoe Keys Water Company) are seeking the following: 1. SUPPORT from LRWQCB for Water Suppliers’ four actions identified in the Call to Action document: a. Extract PCE from groundwater as soon as possible to prevent another public water supply well from being contaminated b. Provide replacement water sources for Lukins Brothers Water Company to replace water supply lost to PCE contamination. Proposed solutions include well head treatment and new wells. c. Provide replacement water sources for Tahoe Keys Water Company to replace water supply lost to PCE contamination. Potential solutions include well head treatment and new wells. d. Install and monitor sentinel wells between the PCE plume and uncontaminated wells adjacent to the PCE plume. If plume spreads to adjacent wells, the majority of South Lake Tahoe’s community water supply will be contaminated. 2. ADVICE on how the Water Suppliers can present the issue to the Regional Water Quality Control Board and State Water Board to ensure the Boards understand the issue and have the authority to act on our requests. 3. DIRECTION from LRWQCB on federal, state, and local resources available to clean up the contamination and create new water supplies: money, staff time, project management, etc. 4. COMMUNITY PARTNERS the Water Suppliers should involve that will encourage State and Federal agencies to respond in a timely manner to the four actions identified above.
