CME personnel arrived on-site of the Bijou waterline replacement project in South Lake Tahoe. Arrived on
Fairway at 8:00am and as crew prepared to head east on Cloverdale.
The Vinciguerra crew (1 operator, Jim and 6 Underground Utility Pipe Fitters, 1 Truck Driver) arrived began to
peel asphalt off of Cloverdale. Approximately 300’ was peeled off and existing utilities were pot holed prior to the
the excavation beginning.
The crew placed 6” of aggregate base to be used as bedding under the C900 DR 18 or DR14, pipe placed on
top of it. The DR 14 is used in conjunction with bell restraints where we go under the sewer or where we are within
10’ of sewer mainline. They then placed base up to spring line and water jetted it to make sure there were no voids
under the pipe. 1’ of aggregate base was then placed over the pipe and compacted by jumping jack whackers.
95% of the maximum dry density is required on base and testing was performed. The maximum dry density of the
base is a 132.6 at 7.2% moisture as provided by CME on 5-18-22. The results of the testing can be found in this
report. The native material that was placed was also tested using a 119.6 maximum dry density and 11.5%
moisture. These numbers were also provided by the CME laboratory. Results for this testing can also be found in
this report as well as 1 from Thursday that was back calculated. Although the the specifications call for 95% had
been informed by Adrian with STPUD that 90% would be satisfactory on the intermediate backfill. A compaction
wheel attached to an excavator was used for compaction efforts.
The crew did expose a 2” steel pipe about 1’ below pavement that appeared to be abandoned,. It was decided
that they could cut it out of the way and continue on. It was located across from 3532 Cloverdale.
A concrete kicker was also placed behind the hydrant valve on the south side of the Fairway and Cloverdale
intersection.
Contractor did backfill approximately 120’ of trench that had been flooded last week. The base in the trench
was solid and native material was placed on top and density testing was performed. The testing was satisfactory
but it remains to be seen if any pipe lengths will need to be removed to get minimum cover.
Departed site 1800 as crew continued clean up.
